King and Galloway are Smitty’s Bison Sports Athletes of the Week

Women's hockey student-athlete, Becca King and men's volleyball student-athlete, John Galloway have been named the Smitty's Bison Sports Athletes of the Week for the week ending January 31/10.

Forward Becca King continued her strong play this season as she was a large part of the #6 ranked Manitoba Bisons women’s hockey team sweeping the UBC Thunderbirds in a two game road weekend series on Jan. 29-30. The team has now registered wins in 16 of the last 18 conference regular season games.

Over the road weekend sweep, King produced three points (one goal and two assists) with a plus/minus rating of +4 with two shots.

On Friday, Jan. 29, the fourth year forward did not register a point but added a +1 rating in a tight 2-1 win. The next night, King opened the scoring and added two assists along with a +3 rating and two shots in the 5-3 victory.

King is now fourth in team scoring with 13 points (two goals, 11 assists) during the 2009-10 season. Her 11 assists are tied for eighth best in Canada West.


Manitoba (16-4-0) has already clinched a playoff spot but still in a tight battle for second place with Saskatchewan (only ahead by five points). They host the fourth place Regina Cougars (5-7-6) on Feb. 5-6 at a special time of 3 p.m. CT held at the Max Bell Arena (U of Manitoba campus).


The #10 ranked Manitoba Bisons men’s volleyball went on the road and swept the UBC Thunderbirds during the Jan. 29-30 weekend. John Galloway led the team to the two wins, which kept the Bison playoff aspirations alive as they battle for the final playoff spot in the Canada West.

In the two road match victories, Galloway smashed 29 kills with 26 digs with four total blocks and three service aces while playing in all nine sets.

On Friday, Jan. 30, the Bisons dug deep and won a tough five setter (W 3-2 25-19, 25-21, 22-25, 24-26, 20-18) and the fifth year outside hitter had 13 kills with 14 digs and three blocks (assisted). In the return match, the Bisons earned the sweep as Galloway notched a game-high 16 kills with 12 digs and two service aces in the 3-1 (25-15, 18-25, 26-24, 25-21) win.

In team stats, Galloway is third on the Bisons with 137 kills, second with 79 digs, third with 29 total blocks and tied for second with nine service aces.


Manitoba (7-8) is in seventh and in the last playoff spot in Canada West. The Herd will host the #8 Winnipeg Wesmen (8-5) on Wednesday, Feb. 3 starting at 7:30 p.m. CT at the Investors Group Athletic Centre (U of Manitoba campus).
