The No. 6 ranked Bison women’s hockey team has now beaten the Regina Cougars ten consecutive conference games as the Bisons defeated Regina by a 5-1 score on Saturday, February 6 at the Max Bell Arena (U of Manitoba campus).

With the win, Manitoba clinches second place in Canada West with a record of 18-4-0. The Herd will now be hosting the Saskatchewan Huskies in the Canada West Semi-Final for the third year in a row. The dates for the semi-final will be confirmed in the near future.

Saturday’s game was the feature entertainment for the first ever Female’s Minor Hockey Day. Youth female hockey teams from all over the city of all different age groups were in attendance at the Max Bell Arena. The Archwood Stars (Atoms),  Portage Terriors (bantoms), Fort Garry Flyers (pee-wee’s 1, 2 and atoms), Stonewall Blues and Eastside Sabres were invited to join the women’s bison hockey team for a post-game skate. The youngsters collected autographs and snapped pictures with the Bison players.

Andrew Patterson marketing coordinator for Bison Sports said, “Hopefully today’s event will raise awareness of how female hockey is the highest growing sport in amateur sports. Who knows, maybe one of the young girls will be inspired to wear the brown and gold for the Bisons one day.”

All the fun and festivities was a great post-game environment for the women’s Bison hockey team to celebrate clinching their second place Canada West finish.

Bison goaltender Stacey Corfield commented, “It’s great to celebrate a win with all these youth girls teams, but we have a tough semi-final ahead of us.”

Bison women’s hockey head coach Jon Rempel commented, “Getting the Huskies on our home ice will be key to our success. We lost two games against them on their ice in January. It’s going to be a battle between two teams playing great hockey.”

Confidence is high on the Bisons team having had five different goal scorers in their last three games. They will need to have similar team efforts to get the win in their next game against the Swiss Olympic National women’s hockey team, who they will be playing on Monday, February 8 at 4:30 p.m. CT in the Max Bell Arena.

Regina is still battling for the fourth and final playoff spot when they host Lethbridge on February 12-13 weekend series.
