The Manitoba Bisons women’s volleyball team will be playing for a CIS National Championship. The squad defeated the University of Alberta Pandas by a 3-1 (25-6, 25-17, 21-25, 27-25) score in the CIS semi-final match on Saturday, March 6.
Manitoba is the third seed for the 2010 CIS Women’s Volleyball National Championship being held from March 5-7 at the University of Alberta in Edmonton. They will now face #1 seed UBC Thunderbirds in the CIS Final match on Sunday, March 7 at 7 p.m. CT.
The Bisons (15-5 regular season; 5-1 playoffs) blew the doors off the University of Alberta’s Main Gym by running out to a first set win of 25-6. Manitoba had a hitting attack percentage of .591 and tied the all-time CIS Championship record for largest margin of a set win (record set at 2000 CIS Championship when Manitoba won 25-6 in quarter final match against Memorial). Manitoba continued to play at a top level as they won the second set 25-17 and looked to be in control of the match. The home side Pandas rallied with a strong third set with a 25-21 advantage and set-up an intense fourth set where both team had sets points before Manitoba prevailed with a 27-25 victory.
“We were ready to play and they started slow. It was just one set and happy we continued to play well in the second,” stated Bison women’s volleyball head coach Ken Bentley. “I was pleased that we stayed disciplined and executed at a high level throughout the match.
In the semi final match, Manitoba was led by Manitoba’s Player of the Match Ashley Voth who had a game-high 17 kills with a .333 hitting percentage and six digs. Left side Kate Wasyliw registered ten kills and 11 digs; middle Tricia Mayba had eight kills, seven digs and two blocks; middle Amy Penner notched nine blocks and four kills while setter Sam Loewen finished with a game-high 38 assists, eight digs and five kills.
Since 1981, this was the sixth time both Manitoba and Alberta met in the CIS Championship and the Bisons earned their first-ever victory over the Pandas at a CIS Nationals, now with a 1-5 mark versus Alberta. The last match-up between the two teams, prior to this meeting, was in the 2000 CIS Championship when Manitoba lost 3-2 in sets in the CIS Final during the first season of rally service point system.
The Bisons improve their CIS Championship record to 40-15 record in 19 CIS Championship appearances since 1982. Manitoba is second in wins at the CIS Nationals.
