The #3 seed Manitoba Bisons women’s volleyball team goal of winning a CIS National Championship fell one match short this season. The squad lost to the #1 seed University of British Columbia Thunderbirds by a 3-1 (17-25, 25-19, 16-25, 22-25) score in the CIS Final match on Sunday, March 7.
With the loss, the Bisons earned a silver medal and this is now the sixth time in the program’s history (1980-81, 1985-86, 1986-87, 1997-98, 1999-00 and 2009-10).
“We came here to win, not for second,” said dejected Bison women’s volleyball head coach Ken Bentley after the close match. “I thought we did a great job all weekend…I was proud of our team to get to this match but our goal was to win here.”
The Bisons (15-5 regular season; 5-2 playoffs) started a little slow as the Thunderbirds had a run of five points to the second technical to lead 16-9 and continued to a first win of 25-17. In the second, Manitoba regained its footing and played strong with defence and .390 hitting percentage for a 25-19 result. In the third, Manitoba led 10-8 when UBC went on a seven point run along with starting libero Nicole Hall going down to injury at 13-10. Hall did not return for the rest of the match. UBC kept their margin for the rest of the set and won 25-16. In the fourth, Sarah Morrissette went into the libero position and Manitoba was tied as late as 13-13. The Herd battled hard throughout the set but could not overcome a late UBC surge and lost 25-22.
UBC won their third consecutive CIS Championship and seventh overall CIS banner. This was the first meeting between the two teams in a CIS Final and overall both teams have now won twice against each other in CIS Championship matches.
In the final match, Manitoba was led by Manitoba’s Player of the Match Ashley Voth who had a team-high 13 kills with a .281 hitting percentage and 11 digs. Middle Tricia Mayba had nine kills, outside hitter Kristi Hunter had eight kills, left side Kate Wasyliw registered seven kills and five digs while setter Sam Loewen finished with a 39 assists and four kills.
For Manitoba, Ashley Voth and Tricia Mayba were named CIS Championship Tournament All-Stars. The Bisons now have a CIS Championship record of 40-16 record in 19 CIS Championship appearances since 1982. Manitoba is second in wins and first in winning percentage at 71.4% at the CIS Nationals.
