Women's volleyball student-athlete, Tricia Mayba and men's hockey student-athlete, Steve Christie have been named the Smitty's Bison Sports Athletes of the Week for the week ending March 7/10.
Tricia Mayba was a strong presence in the middle position throughout the 2010 CIS Women’s Volleyball National Championship that ran from March 5-7 at the University of Alberta in Edmonton.
Mayba was selected a CIS Championship Tournament All-Star, along with Bison Ashley Voth, as the #3 seed Bisons finished the 2009-10 season as the second best team in the country after a silver medal performance during the eight team CIS Nationals.
In the CIS Quarter Final match, Manitoba defeated the University of Toronto Varsity Blues by a 3-0 (25-21, 25-20, 25-19) score on Friday, March 5. Mayba led Manitoba with a team-high ten kills on .400 hitting percentage and four blocks and digs. The Bisons defeated the University of Alberta Pandas by a 3-1 (25-6, 25-17, 21-25, 27-25) score in the CIS semi-final match on Saturday, March 6. The third year player registered eight kills, seven digs and two blocks.
Manitoba’s goal of winning a CIS National Championship fell one match short this season. The squad lost to the #1 seed University of British Columbia Thunderbirds by a 3-1 (17-25, 25-19, 16-25, 22-25) score in the CIS Final match on Sunday, March 7. In the Championship Final, Mayba contributed nine kills on .389 hitting percentage plus three blocks.
With the second place finish in the CIS Nationals, the Bisons earned a silver medal and this is now the sixth time in the program’s history (1980-81, 1985-86, 1986-87, 1997-98, 1999-00 and 2009-10).
Steve Christie backstopped the Manitoba Bisons men’s hockey team to a historic Canada West Semi-Final series win over the #9 ranked and 2008-09 Canada West finalist Saskatchewan Huskies in Saskatoon during the March 5-7 weekend.
With Manitoba series win over the Huskies, it marks the first time that Saskatchewan lost a Canada West hockey playoff series on home ice. Entering the 2009-10 post-season, Saskatchewan was a perfect 17-0 in Canada West playoff series played at Rutherford Arena in Saskatoon since the Huskies hosted their first post-season series in 1981-82. The Huskies were 33-4 (.895) in 38 playoff games played on home ice entering the weekend's series vs. Manitoba. Christie earned two victories while only giving up seven goals with 101 saves during the three game playoff series. He also was named a first star and second star in the two Bison victories.
In game one, Christie began the Canada West Semi-Final series with 32 saves and gave up four goals in a 5-2 home win for Saskatchewan on Friday, March 5. In game two, Christie was named first star with a 36 save performance in a 4-2 Bison victory on Saturday, March 6. In the series clincher, Christie was superb again as he stopped 33 saves, while Saskatchewan was 1/11 on the power play, and selected second star in a 5-1 win on Sunday, March 7. This is a second time that Christie has earned Smitty’s Bison Sports Male Athlete of the Week honour for the 2009-10 season (Oct. 5). Manitoba now advances to the Canada West Final best-of-three series against Alberta on March 12-14, for the first time since 2000-01 season.
