2010 Bison Track & Field CIS Championship Preview

As the 2010 CIS Track and Field Championship begins in Windsor, ON from March 11-13, Manitoba is currently unranked at number 13 for the men’s team and unranked for the women’s team at number 11 in the latest CIS Top 10 poll (Mar. 9/10).

For the Bisons men’s squad, this has been an interesting season with the squad absorbing graduation and injuries and not as strong in depth as last season.
Manitoba has a strong possibility to medal at several individual and relay events and will look to contend at a Top 10 level this CIS championship.

Bison head coach Claude Berube reflected, “This not the same group as last season and we would like to see a Top 10 finish from the men’s side. We have some expectations on medals from Garth Suppes and Justin Charrier along with the relay teams.”

The Bison men’s track and field team has been ranked in four of the 12 CIS polls so far this season while the women’s team has been ranked in seven of the 12 CIS polls this season.
The Bison men’s track and field team started ranked ninth and reached a high of number eight for one week on Dec. 15/09. For the women, the team was ranked as high as number four on Dec. 15/09 and ranked in six consecutive weeks (Dec. 8/09-Feb.2/10).

There is a large contingent Bison athletes competing at this season’s CIS Championship. Of the 27 Bison athletes, 14 men and 13 women earned a spot on the 2010 CIS Championship squad (up from last season’s 19 Bison participants). The increase is shown on the women’s side as they were only five Bison women athletes at the 2009 CIS Nationals.

Manitoba has medal chances from the men’s team beginning with Garth Suppes, The fifth year senior  was the 2010 Canada West champion title holder in the men’s weight toss and currently ranked first in CIS in that event and also 11th in the shot put heading into Nationals. Fifth year Justin Charrier was third at this season’s conference championship and CIS ranked number four in the weight toss. Third year Josh Gundrum successfully defended his Canada West title in men’s triple jump and is ranked sixth in the CIS in that event. Third year Travis Toet is eighth in CIS in the 600m; second year Lucas Rodewald is 11th in CIS in high jump; fourth year Rossel Sabourin is 12th in CIS in pole vault and second year Tyrone Welchinski is 12th in high jump in the latest CIS rankings. The men’s 4x400 and 4x800 relay teams are ranked tenth in CIS. Colin Barnett, Zacharie Durand, Jamie McMaster, Jordan Saccuci, Andrew Schellenberg, David Szczepaniak and Jay Waters will also be involved in relays.

The Bisons women’s team has continued to improve throughout the season and have several newcomers competing in their first-ever CIS Championship. This season, the squad will definitely improved on the tied for 14th place showing at the 209 CIS Championship and reach for a Top 10 finish.

Berube said, “I am very pleased with the increase of Bison women athletes at this year’s CIS. We have medal potentials with Dana Baker and Caley Miskimmin plus the relays. There are numerous athletes who make their debut at the CIS Nationals and this will reflect well for the progression of the women’s program over the next couple of seasons.”

One of the best chances for an individual medal on the women’s side is fifth year senior and two sport athlete Dana Baker. Baker enters the CIS as the third ranked in the women’s long jump plus was second at the 2010 Canada West Championship. She will also compete on the 4x40m relay team. In addition, four sport athlete and fifth year Caley Miskimmin was the 60m champion at the 2009 Canada West Championship and is ranked seventh in CIS for the 60m event this season.

In pole vault, third year Teresa Logozar is ranked fourth in CIS and Alex Allen is ranked seventh in CIS; both finished in Top 4 in this season’s conference championship. Third year Katrina Bruckschwaiger is seventh in CIS in the 3000m and third year Lisa Wong tenth in CIS in the 60m this season. The women’s 4x200m is sixth in CIS, 4x400m is seventh in CIS and the 4x800m relay team is eighth in CIS.
