The 2009-10 Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) women’s hockey major awards plus All-Canadian and All-Rookie selections were announced on Wednesday, March 10. The University of Manitoba Bisons women’s hockey team earned one selection in a major award and two selections as All-Canadians.
Bison women’s hockey defenceman Caitlin MacDonald has been named as CIS Rookie of the Year as well as CIS First Team All-Canadian plus CIS All-Rookie Team for the 2009-10 season. This is the first time a Manitoba Bisons women’s hockey player has been named as CIS Rookie of the Year (since the award was first selected in the 1999-00 season) and as a CIS All-Canadian First Team in the 13 year program’s history. MacDonald was also named as 2009-10 Canada West Women’s Hockey Rookie of the Year plus Canada West First Team. Goaltender Stacey Corfield has also been named as a CIS Second Team All-Canadian for the 2009-10 season. This is the first time a Manitoba Bisons women’s hockey player has been named twice to a CIS All-Canadian Team in the program’s history. Corfield was also selected as 2008-09 CIS Second Team All-Canadian. In her rookie season, Caitlin MacDonald was a force throughout the Canada West 2009-10 season. MacDonald, 17, is a skilled 5’7” defenceman in her first season with the Manitoba Bisons women’s hockey team after her prep school hockey with the Balmoral Hall Blazers. She played in all 24 conference regular season games and all five playoff games this season for Manitoba. The Winnipeg native was second in conference defenceman regular season scoring with 15 points (six goals, nine assists), third in team scoring and 20th overall in Canada West. Her six goals were all on the power play and ranked her sixth best in that conference category. Plus, MacDonald fired a game-winning goal vs. UBC on October 30 in just her fifth league game and is already recognized as having one of the hardest point shots in Canada West. Her performance helped the #6 ranked Bisons reach the Canada West Final after an 18-6-0 regular season record. In addition, MacDonald made team history, as she became the first current Bison to be named to a national squad. She was one of the 20 players selected that will represent Team Canada at the 2010 IIHF World Women’s Under-18 Championship, which will take place from March 27-April 3 in Chicago, Ill. Bison women’s hockey head coach Jon Rempel said, “Caitlin has had a tremendous first year in CIS and has made the transition from high school to university a seamless one. She is skilled, a very hard worker on and off the ice and very passionate about the game. Her ability to skate the game as well as shoot the puck with velocity and accuracy are impressive for a first-year player. Along with her natural offensive ability, Caitlin has worked very hard to make herself a better all around defensive player, a factor that has helped her overall game develop at a rapid pace.” In the 2009-09 regular season, Corfield, 22, completed her fifth and final season with the Bisons as the program’s most successful goaltender. She was named to her fourth conference first team all-star squad (2006-07, 2007-08, 2008-09, 2009-10 and also named conference co-rookie of the year in the 2005-06 season). In the 2009-10 conference regular season, the senior netminder started 21 of 24 conference games and finished second in Canada West with a goals against average at 1.85 plus third in Canada West with a .919 Save Percentage with third most minutes at 1264. The Winnipeg, MB native was also second in conference with 15 victories and tied for second in Canada West with three shutouts. She placed fifth in Canada West with 443 conference saves. Corfield was also selected as Player of the Game versus the Switzerland National Women’s Hockey Team in a non-conference game (Feb. 8/10). Bisons women’s hockey head coach Jon Rempel stated, “We are very pleased to have Stacey earn selection for CIS All-Canadian Team for a second consecutive season as she has had a major impact on our success of the program over the years.”
Bison women’s hockey notes: MacDonald became the first freshman in three years to be selected as a First Team All-Canadian. In 2007-08 season, forward Addie Miles became the first Bison named to a CIS All-Rookie Team.
