Bison Sports announce 103 student-athletes achieving CIS Academic All-Canadians status for the 2014-15 season

This mark is the most-ever Bisons on the CIS academic list

At the completion of the 2014-2015 season, 103 of the 310 University of Manitoba student-athletes qualified for CIS Academic All-Canadian status by maintaining a minimum grade point average of 3.5 (80%) or better in their field of study at the University of Manitoba. This is the fifth consecutive season that 85 or more Bison student-athletes have achieved this national recognition. 

In addition, the feat of 103 Bison student-athletes on the CIS academic list is the most-ever in one season (previous record established in 2011-12 season was 102).  

The total of 103 Bison Sport student-athletes earning CIS Academic All-Canadian represents 33.2% of all Bison Sport student-athletes (310) to achieve this national recognition in past year. The overall percentage of Bison student-athletes named as CIS Academic All-Canadians has been at 20% or higher over the last 11 consecutive years and also the fifth consecutive year at 25% or higher rate.

Some major academic Bison highlights include: four Bison student-athlete to achieve this CIS recognition in all five varsity years – Robyn Eyer of women's basketball, Lauren Kroeker of football, Eric Thacher from men's cross country and track and field plus Sarah Huebert with women's track and field. 

Nine other Bison student-athletes receive this CIS award for the fourth time – women's basketball player Sheree Carmona-Galdamez, women's soccer Sarah Haiko, women's swimming Sydney Gergely, football Bryden Bone and Mitchell Harrison, men's golf Brodie Gobin, men's swimming Bradley Ryant, men's track and field Devin Edwards and women's volleyball Jordana Milne. 

There were also ten Bison student-athletes who are now three-time CIS Academic All-Canadians plus an additional 27 Bisons who have achieved this feat for a second time.

"Congratulations to all 103 CIS Academic All-Canadians on their impressive accomplishment. I would also like to acknowledge our coaches for recruiting these outstanding student-athletes to our campus," stated Bison Sports Athletic Director Coleen Dufresne. "Exceptional coaches, a history of success both in the classroom and on the field of play and outstanding facilities continue to make the University of Manitoba the destination of choice for student-athletes from Manitoba and across Canada."

Selected highlights from the 2014-15 CIS Academic All-Canadian Bison list 

  • -Bison female athletes account for 55% (56 of 102) of this year's list, highlighted by women's hockey with 12 of 24 players (50%), while men's swimming produced the highest percentage of male athletes per team with seven of 13 (54%)
  • For the fourth consecutive season, football had seven or more Academic All-Canadians 
  • There was 18 Bisons earning Academic All-Canadian status while studying at the Faculty of Kinesiology and Recreation Management
  • Both track and field teams (combined with cross country) had the highest number of Academic All-Canadians with 48 (T&F: 30 and T&F plus cross country: 18) 
  • Eight of the Bison teams had at least five or more Academic All-Canadians
  • There were 32 Bison student-athletes (31% of whole Bison total) who earned a 4.0 or higher mark (an A - 90%)
  • Since Academic All-Canadians stats taken in 1990, 1,436 Bisons earned this award
