Congrats to newest Bison Hockey Hall of Fame inductees - MHKY: Bob Lowes; WHKY: Caitlin MacDonald. Both inducted into HoF at annual Bison fundraiser event on Wed., Jan. 31, 2018.
The special celebration was held for the first time at Assiniboine Park Conservancy: Journey to Churchill Exhibit (2595 Roblin Boulevard) with special guest NHL Vegas Golden Knight assistant General Manager Kelly McCrimmon in attendance. In addition to McCrimmon attendance, this 2018 event included two Bison Alumni (one from each program)Â inducted into the Bison Hockey Hall of Fame.
Proceeds from the evening went to support student athletic scholarships needs of the Bison women's and men's hockey programs.
The Bison Men's Hockey Hall of Fame was established in the 1980's. This year's inductee is Bob Lowes. He played with the Bisons from 1985-89 and was team captain in 1986-87. Lowes was also named Bison Best Defensive Forward Award (1985-86, 1986-87) and was then assistant Coach in 1987-88. He earned his Bachelor of Recreation at the University of Manitoba in 1989 and then has had an illustrious career in hockey since. The Prince Albert, SK native started head coaching with Nipawin Hawks, Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (1989-91) and SJHL & Anavet Cup Champions in 1989-90. After a year in WHL as assistant coach with Seattle, he was the head coach with the Brandon Wheat Kings from 1992-2001 and complied a 370-243-35 record while also WHL & CHL Coach Of the Year (1995-96), WHL East Division Winners (1994-95, 1995-96, 1996-97) and WHL President Trophy Champions (1995-96). Lowes then was head coach of the Regina Pats from 2001-04 and WHL & CHL Coach of the Year (2001-02). He was then part of Hockey Canada as an assistant coach, National U18 Team, World Championships in 2002 and head coach, National U18 Team, Hlinka Memorial Cup in 2004. Lowes returned to Brandon as scout from 2005-07 then amateur scout with NHL's Ottawa Senators from 2007-14 followed by Director of Amateur Scouting with Senators (2014-16) and now Assistant Director of Player Personnel with Vegas Golden Knights (2016 to present).
The third inductee into the Bison Women's Hockey Hall of Fame was defenceman Caitlin MacDonald. MacDonald played for five seasons with the Bisons from 2009-10 to 2013-14 and made an immediate impact at Manitoba. In her career, the Winnipeg native was selected 2009-10 U SPORTS and Canada West Rookie of the Year. She earned four conference selections (2009-10, 2010-11, 2012-13 and 2013-14) as a Canada West First Team All-Star (2009-10 and 2012-13 and 2013-14) and Canada West Second Team All-Star (2010-11) at the defenceman position. In addition, named U SPORTS First Team All-Canadian (2009-10) and U SPORTS Second Team All-Canadian (2012-13). MacDonald also had two power play goals and was one of the alternate captains while earning a gold medal with Team Canada at the 2013 Winter Universiade (World University Games) in December in Trentino, Italy. Plus, she was a three-time U SPORTS Academic All-Canadian (2011-12, 2012-13, 2013-14), alternate captain for two seasons (2012-14), made team history, as she became the first Bison women's hockey player to be named to a national squad as was one of the 20 players selected for Team Canada at the 2010 IIHF World Women's Under-18 Championship and finished her Bison career with totals of 58 points (23 goals, 35 assists) in 121 conference regular season games and added six points (1g, 5a) in 13 playoff games.
