In the second week of post-season during the 2014 CIS football season, Manitoba Bisons fourth year running back Kienan LaFrance was selected as CIS Offence Football Athlete of the Week for the period ending on Nov. 16, 2014.
In addition, this is the sixth time Manitoba football players have been highlighted in CIS weekly honours (Sept. 14/14: Jonathan Jones – defence; Alex Christie – special teams; Oct. 19/14: David Onyemata – defence; Nov. 2/14: Alex Christie – special teams; Nov. 9/14: Jayden McKoy – defence; Nov. 16/14: Kienan LaFrance – offence).
LaFrance, a fourth-year science student from Winnipeg, was honoured on offence after he led the unranked Bisons (6-4) to a 27-15 road win over No. 4 Calgary in Saturday's Hardy Cup final, a result that put an end to the Dinos' six-year Canada West championship streak.
The 5-foot-10, 205-pound senior rushed for 155 yards and one touchdown on 30 carries as Manitoba managed to keep the ball for almost 36 minutes. The Bisons, the last Canada West team to win the Vanier Cup in 2007, visit No. 2 Montreal (9-1) in the Uteck Bowl Saturday at 12:30 p.m. EST (Sportsnet 360, Radio-Canada & CIS-SIC.tv).
Manitoba (regular season: 4-4; playoffs: 2-0) will now be the Canada West representative in the CIS-Semi-Final when they travel to play at the #2 Montreal Carabins (regular season: 7-1; playoffs: 2-0) in the Uteck Bowl on Saturday, November 22 at 12:30 p.m. ET.
