WINNIPEG  - Coming off an impressive home opener win over Mount Royal on Friday night, Manitoba was looking for a weekend sweep of the Cougars on Saturday, October 19 at Wayne Fleming Arena.

Again, the Bisons were able to dominate pace of play against the Cougars, and jumped on to the scoreboard early, holding the lead and winning 3-0.  With the win, the Bisons move to 3-2-1 on the year, while the Cougars fall to 1-5-0.

Manitoba was led by forward Meagan Vestby, who scored her first two goals of the year in the first three minutes to put her team ahead.  Forward Maggie Litchfield-Medd added her fourth of the season to the goal total.  First-year forward Alana Serhan had two goals in the win, while goalie Amanda Schubert earned her first Canada West career shutout with 20 saves.

Mount Royal was held scoreless, but goalie Jessica Ross came off the bench to hold the lead at three, making 23 saves in 50 shutout minutes. Starting goalie Katie Sigurdson allowed three goals on eight shots in the first before getting pulled.

"Our start was impressive tonight, coming out to play like we did.  I thought after that we managed the game well - I would've liked to see us put it away in the second, though, because we had plenty of chances," said Bisons coach Jon Rempel.

After scoring just 1:10 into the first period on Friday night, the Bisons one-upped themselves on Saturday night. Just 1:06 into the game, Serhan deflected a shot on net to put Manitoba up 1-0. She followed that up three minutes later with another goal, this time redirecting an Meagan Vestby shot. The Bisons kept the pedal down, as Litchfield-Medd scored at the nine-minute mark to make it 3-0 headed into the first break.

Scoring went quiet after that, as Ross took over the Mount Royal net to great reward - she stopped several Bisons chances in the second period to keep her team within striking distance. Mount Royal responded in the third, coming out with two powerplay opportunities, but could not capitalize or get on the board.

The Bisons women's hockey team now heads back on the road - next weekend they'll play in Calgary on Friday, October 25 and Saturday, October 26. Puck drops at 7 p.m. CST on Friday, 2 p.m. CST on Saturday.

Mount Royal will continue their road trip, playing next weekend against Regina on Friday, October 25 and Saturday, October 26. Start times are 7 p.m. and 3 p.m. CST, respectively.
