RECOGNIZING TRADITION, HISTORY
The Bisons Block M sweater tradition was established in 2012-13 by former Athletic Director Coleen Dufresne and Associate Athletic Director Curt Warkentin. The tradition was established as a way to celebrate the Bisons' rich tradition and history, build University of Manitoba pride and spirit, and foster a stronger bond with future alumni. That year, Bison Sports presented 29 fourth-year year Bisons with their sweater at the annual Brown and Gold Banquet.
In 2013-14, a decision was made to recognize third-years, with 122 third and fourth-years getting their sweater.
For many years, Bison Sports has held an Academic All-Canadian reception with the UM President. In 2014-15, the Block M sweater presentation was added into this event. That's been the format ever since (aside from 2020-21 – no sweaters presented – pandemic).
A total of 746 sweaters have been presented since the Block M's inception a decade ago.

"As a new recipient of a Bison Block M sweater you have proven yourself to be contributors. You are leaders and you are relied upon to be a source of stability, strength in the face of adversity.
The Bison is the symbol of the Province of Manitoba and Our University. It is a powerful symbol that we can draw from for guidance. Bison are protective, fearless, strong, unified, resilient, sometimes stubborn, and depending on what is required, calm or aggressive. You are being counted on to uphold these qualities and to show newer teammates what it means to be a Bison student/athlete.
You don’t stop being a Bison when your time here is done. As you graduate and move on in your life you are still a Bison and Bison attributes will help you get to where you want to go. Being strong, resilient, calm and fierce, and even slightly stubborn can take you a long way. We hope that you will not forget us and that we can continue to count on your support and commitment as a Bison Alum."
