#9 Bison Football host #10 Saskatchewan in Canada West Semi-Final playoff game on Friday, November 1 with kickoff at 7 p.m. CT

Both teams finished season at 5-3 and first home playoff game for Manitoba since 2007

The #9 Manitoba Bisons football team finished the 2013 conference season with a 5-3 record and second place. The Bisons host the #10 Saskatchewan Huskies (5-3) in Canada West Semi-Final playoff game on Friday, November 1 with kickoff at 7 p.m. CT held at Investors Group Field – the first ever playoff game at the new stadium.

This is the third meeting of this season between the teams as Manitoba won 33-26 at Sask. on October 18 to earn the tie-breaker after losing 36-34 at home on September 7. This is the first time Manitoba will host a playoff football game since the 2007 Vanier Cup Championship season.

During Brian Dobie 18 year at the helm at Manitoba, Manitoba has not won a playoff game over the Huskies as they are 0-3 with the last meeting in 2006 in Canada West Final and Manitoba lost 32-15 at home (Nov. 11/06). In the last 17 years, all three playoff meetings between the two teams have been at Manitoba (Semi-Final: 1999, 2002; Final: 2006) with two other meetings in 1991 and 1973 and the only win by the Bisons in the playoffs against Saskatchewan was a 21-8 win at Manitoba in 1973. 

At stake in the playoff game is advancing to the Canada West Final (Hardy Cup) next weekend. The winner of the game will face either the #3 Calgary Dinos or the UBC Thunderbirds, the participants in the other Canada West Semi-Final on Saturday, Nov. 2.

In 2013 conference regular season final stats, Manitoba was second in scoring offence (38.8 points per game) while Sask. was fourth (28.4). On scoring defence, the Huskies were second  (25.5) and the Bisons were fourth with 30.5. On total offence, Manitoba was second with 546.1 yards per game while Saskatchewan was sixth at 431.0. On total defence, Sask. was third (438.0 yards per game) and Manitoba was fifth (481.8). Individually, Anthony Coombs led the conference in all-purpose yards at 1,696 (212.0 per game) and second with 11 overall TDs while Jordan Yantz was first in Canada West passing with 2,474 yards and first with 25 TDs.
