Manitoba Bisons basketball teams announce team captains for 2013-14 season

Christiane Fischer, Stephanie Gill and Robyn Eyer are captains for women’s squad and Stephan Walton and Amir Ali are for men

Both the Manitoba Bisons basketball teams are pleased to announce the team captains for the upcoming 2013-14 season. 

Bison women's basketball second year co-coaches Michele Hynes and Randy Kusano have fifth year guard Christiane Fischer as team captain and assistant captains are fourth year guards Stephanie Gill and Robyn Eyer. Fifth year Bison men's basketball head coach Kirby Schepp has fifth year guard Stephan Walton and fourth year guard Amir Ali as his team captains for this season. 

For the women, Fischer is captain for second consecutive season for Manitoba. Fischer, 22, played in all 22 conference regular season games in 2012-13 during her second year at Manitoba and second on team with 31 steals last year. Gill, 21, is second time captain and was third in team scoring with 9.6 point per game last season while Eyer, 21, is a new captain and was second on team with 11.0 points per game in 2012-13. Hynes commented about the captains, "Chrissi (Christiane) has been part of the culture shift this year and a selfless player who is positive and upbeat as a great student with community involvement outreach. Steph and Robyn will compliment Chrissi style and other different personality and have embrace the new team culture."

For the men, Walton, 26, is captain for the third consecutive season and Ali, 20, is a first time captain. Walton was named a 2012-13 Canada West Second Team All-Star at the guard position after leading the team and ninth in conference scoring with 17.3 points per game in 2012-13. He was also Top 5 in conference assists (third at 5.0 per game), free throw percentage (second at 86.5%), steals (second at 2.7 per game) and minutes played (second at 34.7 per game). Ali played in 16 of 22 conference regular season games and both playoff games with five steals. Schepp said about the captains, "Steph has been our captain for last three years and both players have great leadership qualities on and off the court. They command the respect of the locker room and what we expect of our leaders."

The conference season opens for both Bisons basketball teams at home against UNBC and Mount Royal on the November 1-2 weekend at Investors Group Athletic Centre.
