Box Score The #6 Manitoba Bisons came back to defeat the #4 Brandon Bobcats in women's volleyball action 3-2 (25-18, 18-25, 23-25, 25-21, 15-8) at the Investors Group Athletic Centre (U of M campus) on Friday, Nov. 15 in a match between two nationally ranked teams.
After splitting the first two sets, the Bobcats (5-2) won a tightly contested third set 25-23. However, the Bisons (5-2) came back with strong efforts in the fourth and fifth sets to upset the fourth ranked Bobcats at home.
"I expected it to be as tough as it was tonight," said Bisons head coach
Ken Bentley. "Brandon is a good team and we had to play very well to win."
Brandon jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the first set and appeared to be in command early. But the Bisons regrouped following a timeout and went ahead 12-9 on a Crystal Mulder service ace. That lead was soon extended to seven and Manitoba would storm out with a 25-18 first set victory.
Early in the second set, the teams traded the lead often but the Bobcats would jump ahead by six at the midway point and wouldn't look back. They would even the match with 25-18 set win. Meaghan Robertson led Brandon with four kills in the set.
Shanlee McLennan's kill gave the Bobcats the edge in a third set that seen the score tied on eight separate occasions. But Manitoba stormed out to a seven point lead midway through the fourth set and withheld a late charge by the Bobcats to send it to a fifth and deciding set.
In the final set, the Bisons kept the momentum rolling. They served flawlessly and took the lead early on and never looked back.
Taylor Pischke's 14th kill of the game was the final one of the match as the Bisons finished off their upset win with a 15-8 final set victory.
The Bisons have now won three straight conference home games against Brandon dating back to the 2011-12 Canada West regular season.
The two top-ten teams will meet against tomorrow evening in Winnipeg. The match is set for 5 p.m. CT at the Investors Group Athletic Centre (U of M campus).
