The Manitoba Bisons women's hockey team hosted the #7 Regina Cougars for the first of two games between these teams this weekend on Saturday November 2 at the Wayne Fleming Arena (U of M campus). Manitoba Bisons lost 1-0 following a late third period goal by Regina Cougars.
With the victory, Regina improves to record of with 7-2-0 for a total of 14 points, while Manitoba falls to a record of 4-4-1 and remains at 9 points.
The first two periods remained scoreless with the Cougars leading the herd 20 to 10 in shots. The games first goal came with just 8:58 remaining in the third period. It was a power play marker notched by Regina defenseman Triston Riemer following a two-minute tripping minor by the Bisons Cassandra Taylor. The late third period goal held-up as the only goal of the game.
Goaltender Jennifer Schmidt stood tall for the Cougars and was able to record her third shutout of the season. Manitoba generated some late scoring chances but was not able to crack the Cougar netminder.
Specialty teams and goaltending proved to be huge for Regina as they were able to kill all four of their penalties and capitalize on a powerplay opportunity. The Bisons took just three penalties but give up the games only goal while shorthanded.
Schmidt turned aside all 31 shots she faced for the victory, while
Amanda Schubert turned aside 13 in the loss.
Both teams play again in a quick turnaround on Sunday, November 3 at 3 p.m. CT at the Wayne Fleming Arena at the Max Bell Centre.
