BRANDON – The Brandon Bobcats women's basketball team picked up the program's first weekend sweep at home since joining the Canada West conference, and got its fifth win of the season over the visiting Manitoba Bisons 57-49 on Saturday, January 18 night.
The win moves Brandon to 5-9 on the season, which marks the first time the Bobcats have got more than four wins in a season since 1984.
Stephanie Haynes and Cassie Cooke both put up double-doubles for the Bobcats, Cooke putting up a game-high 19 points to go along with 10 rebounds while Haynes added 10 points and 12 rebounds. For Manitoba, Vanessa DeVries had a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds while Allison Balasko added 17 boards and nine points in the road loss.
The Bobcats were slow out of the gate, going scoreless until nearly midway through the first quarter. The Bisons capitalized, jumping to a 18-9 first quarter lead.
Brandon answered right back in the second frame, outscoring Manitoba 15-2 early in the second.
The Bobcats continued the pressure for the second half and cruised to a comfortable victory. The loss drops Manitoba to 3-11 on the season.
Up next for the Bobcats is a home and home series with the Winnipeg Wesmen with a home-game at home on Thursday and at the U of W on Saturday. The Bisons will welcome the Regina Cougars for a weekend series at the University of Manitoba.
