Box Score REGINA, Sask. – The University of Regina's men's volleyball team won its first Canada West match of the season on Friday, January 24 night with a straight-sets victory over Manitoba at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
The Cougars (1-16) notched 25-23 wins in both of the first two sets, which featured a total of 16 tie scores and six lead changes. The U of R led from wire to wire and hit .367 as a team in the third set, clinching the match with a 25-20 victory.
Joel Legasse started for the second consecutive match and had a season-high nine kills to lead the Cougars. Legasse also chipped in with five blocks and three digs while hitting .292 in the win, while Andrew Nelson and Matthew Lueck both added seven kills. Lueck also had a team-high seven digs and Rhodri Simmonds led all players with nine blocks as the U of R outblocked Manitoba by a 13-6 margin.
Manitoba (6-11) had three players in double digits for kills, led by Adam DeJonckheere's 12. Devren Dear had 11 for the Bisons, while Kevin Falconer chipped in with 10. Second-year libero Alex Strachan led all players with 10 digs and was also credited with a kill midway through the third set when his over pass on a broken play fell onto the U of R's side of the net for a Bisons point.
The two teams will meet again on Saturday night following the conclusion of the women's match. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
