WINNIPEG – The Manitoba Bisons completed a weekend sweep of the Regina Cougars in men's basketball action with a 83-71 win on Saturday, January 25 at the Investors Group Athletic Centre (U of M campus).
It's the third straight win for the Bisons (4-12), who have also won their last six regular season meetings against Regina dating back three seasons.
Dan Penner recorded a double-double for Manitoba with 19 points and 10 rebounds and Mike Holloway chipped in with 16 points off the bench for the Bisons.
"I thought we had a little bit more flow offensively," said Bisons head coach Kirby Schepp. "We got contributions from four different guys in double digits."
Meanwhile, the Cougars dropped to 3-13. They got 20 points from Brandon Tull, who went 12-for-13 from the free throw line in the game.
The Cougars led by two after one but were held off the score sheet for the first 3:30 of the second quarter, allowing Manitoba to go ahead by five when Andre Arruda scored on a running jump shot and the ensuing free throw. The Bisons expanded their lead to 14 in the final minute of the first half on a three pointer from Mike Holloway, who had 10 points in the opening 20 minutes.
As a group, the Bisons were 17-for-36 (47.2%) from the floor in the first half and headed to the locker room with a 45-31 lead. It was the second straight night that the Bisons held a double digit lead over Regina at the half.
The Cougars were able to narrow the margin to single digits midway through the third quarter. However, back-to-back jumpers by Holloway in the final 1:30 allowed Manitoba to open up their largest lead of the game to that point at 18.
In the fourth, Regina continued to claw at the lead and got within nine with three and a half minutes left after a pair of Travis Sylvestre free throws but they wouldn't get much closer. Manitoba would close out the game in their final possession for their fourth conference victory of the season.
The Bisons will look to continue their winning ways on Friday, January 31 when they begin their final weekend away from home this season with a game against Thompson Rivers. Meanwhile, the Cougars will head to Abbotsford to take on Fraser Valley on the same night.
