In men's hockey, #5 Mount Royal beats #8 Manitoba 4-0 in first of two game series

The two teams play again tomorrow at 1 p.m. CT

Box Score Friday October 17, 2014, the #5 Mount Royal Cougars men's hockey team beat the #8 Manitoba Bison 4-0 in the first of a two game series at the Wayne Fleming Arena.
 
With the win the Cougars improve to 6-1-0 while the Bisons fall to 4-3-0
 

The first period was a display of both teams' penalty killing abilities. The Bisons were 6/6 on the penalty kill while the Cougars were 5/5. Both teams' goalies did their part on the PK, both remained unbeaten through the first period.
 
Manitoba's fourth year defenseman Barren Bestland hammered Mount Royal's first year forward David Stephens, with an open ice five minuets into the second period. The play was whistled dead and Stephens went to the bench under some distress. Stephens later left the game.
 
With four minuets left in the second Cougars goalie Dalyn Flette, stopped second year Bisons forward Jordan DePape on the breakaway, maintaining the net minders perfect game.
 
With 31 seconds left in the second, Tyler Fiddler opened the scoring for the visiting team by putting a rebound in to the back of the net.
 
The Cougars momentum carried over to the third period. Forward Darren Bestland, scored a power play goal up high on Bisons third year goaltender, Deven Dubyk 32 seconds into the period. Forward Jeff Barrett put the visiting team up 3-0 while on the power play midway through the period. With six minuets remaining in the game Mount Royal went up 4-0 when Cody Cartier scored five-hole on Dubyk.
 
Cougars' goalie, Dalyn Flette completed the shutout making 28 saves.
 
"We made some really good offensive plays and Flette made some great saves," said Bisons coach Mike Sirant, "We created some good offense and he was there to make the stops. We don't feel that we played up to our capabilities, we certainly didn't play the way we have the last couple weekends."
 
The Bisons and Cougars have a matinee rematch tomorrow at Manitoba. Puck drop at 1 p.m. CT.
