Box Score WINNIPEG, MB - The University of Manitoba Bisons defeated the Trinity Western Spartans 96-78 to win their second game of the 2014 men's basketball season at the Investors Group Athletic Centre on Saturday, November 1.The victory came a day after beating TWU 84-56 in their home opener on Friday. Manitoba now stands at 2-0, while Trinity West fell to 0-2.
"They responded very well from the first game," said Manitoba head coach
Kirby Schepp, "but we made shots and came out on top."
The home team had an 81.8 field goal percentage during the first quarter, but finished the game at 55.4 per cent overall. Trinity Western made 33.3 per cent in the first quarter and 47.0 per cent overall.
Stephan Walton led the scoring for the Bisons with 25 points and six rebounds and forward Jesse Jeffers sunk 24 points for the Spartans.The Bisons were ahead 22-12 by the end of the first quarter and maintained their double-digit lead throughout the second to finish the half up 46-34.Â
TWU couldn't keep up with Manitoba in the third, as the Bisons scored 21 points to lead 75-54 heading into the final quarter.The Bisons shot a strong 70.6 overall free throw percentage and made 42 rebounds in the 96-78 win.
"We won," said Schepp, "but it was a bit of an ugly game."
No players fouled out, but Manitoba racked up 24 personal fouls in the game. Trinity West had 23.
The Bisons will take on the University of Regina Cougars in their first league conference road game of the season on Friday, November 7 at 8 p.m. CST. The Spartans host the University of Alberta at 8 p.m. PST in their home opener.
