Bobcats sweep Bisons at Home in women's basketball

Manitoba drops to 0-6 after home loss

WINNIPEG - After a sluggish first half, the women's basketball team from Brandon came away with a weekend sweep of the Manitoba Bison, winning 66-56 on Saturday, November 15, 2014 at Investors Group Athletic Centre (U of Manitoba campus).

The Bobcats were led by post players Alyssa Montgomery and Amy Williams, who scored twenty-one and nineteen points respectively.

After one quarter, Brandon led 13-11. Both teams looked sluggish to start the game and failed to take care of the ball. Manitoba committed seven turnovers while the Bobcats turned the ball over six times. Neither team shot the ball well either. Brandon shot just 31.3% from the field, while the Bison shot 33.3%

In the second, the Bison responded. Manitoba went into halftime leading 27-25 and shot 45.8% from the floor. Brandon was unable to increase their shooting efficiency. They shot a putrid 29.6% in the first half. Free throws were a problem for both teams in the first half. Manitoba shot 55% from the line, while Brandon was 9-18 from the foul strip.

Robyn Eyer and Vanessa DeVries led the way for Manitoba, each scoring six points in the first half. For Brandon, Alyssa Montgomery continued her strong play from last night, scoring eleven first half points. 

Brandon and Manitoba came out energized in the third quarter, scoring twenty and seventeen points respectively. The tandem of Williams and Montgomery did most of the work for the Bobcats, scoring 15 combined in the quarter. For Manitoba, Robyn Eyer scored four in the quarter. Brandon led 45-44 heading into the fourth quarter.

The Bison were unable to manufacture enough scoring and defense in the fourth to come away with the victory. Manitoba managed to score twelve points in the quarter, but committed six more turnovers. The Bison finished the game with twenty-five turnovers on the game.

Brandon was unrelenting, and scored twenty-one points to finish the game, and clinch the weekend sweep of the Bison.

The Bison drop to 0-6 on the year, while the Bobcats improve to 2-4. Manitoba will head on the road to play the University of Calgary November 21 at 7 p.m. CT and 22 at 6 p.m. CT. Brandon will play at home next weekend against Trinity Western University on November 21 and 22.
