In women's basketball, Manitoba lose 87-72 at Winnipeg

Bisons finish 2013-14 Canada West regular season with 5-17 record

The University of Winnipeg Wesmen women's basketball team ended their season on a winning note after posting a 87-72 victory over the University of Manitoba Bisons on Friday, Feb. 14 evening on Valentine's Day at the Dr. David F. Anderson Gymnasium.

Fourth year guard Stephanie Kleysen led the Wesmen with 26 points and three steals. Megan Noonan added 18 points and eight assists while fifth year forward Alyssa Grant had 13 points in her final game as a Wesmen. Danielle Baril also playing her final game led the Wesmen with six rebounds.

Robyn Eyer led Manitoba with 13 points, including a pair of three-pointers. Vanessa DeVries added 12 while Morgan Cross finished with 11. Christiane Fischer led the team with eight rebounds.

Winnipeg started the game building a 24-12 lead after the opening quarter and took control of the contest in the second quarter outscoring Manitoba 24-8 to take a 48-20 lead into the halftime break.

The Wesmen shot an impressive 56% from the field in the opening half and holding the Bisons to 8-of-25 (32%) shooting in the opening 20 minutes.

Manitoba came alive in the second half and was able to cut into the Wesmen lead after outscoring the home side 28-17 in the third quarter. Winnipeg went into the third quarter with a 65-48 lead. The Bisons could not get any closer in the fourth quarter, despite connecting on 53% of their shots from the field in the second half.

The Wesmen finish the season with a record of 12-10. Manitoba ends their season with a record of 5-17.
