CALGARY – A three-point performance by defenceman Kodie Curran helped the University of Calgary Dinos men's hockey team to their second win of the opening weekend, 4-1 over the University of Manitoba Bisons on Saturday, September 27 night at the Father David Bauer Arena.

Once again, it was the Dinos' ability to get off to a quick start and to stay discipline that led to the sweep. While penalties piled up for Manitoba, Calgary continued to capitalize on opportunities. Curran's three points on Saturday gives him five to start the season, while Cain Franson netted a pair of goals, bringing his total to three through two games.

The Dinos are 2-0-0 to start the year, while the Bisons fall to 0-0-2.

Applying pressure right from the drop of the puck, the Dinos were able to take a 2-0 lead out of the first period as a pair of forwards collected their second goals of the season.

Elgin Pearce got the offence started as he took a pass from Curran and busted into the Manitoba zone. The former Medicine Hat Tiger toe dragged the puck and launched it high over the blocker of Brendan Jensen for a 1-0 lead.

The Dinos doubled their lead just over half way through the opening frame as Brooks Myers' shot from the right side trickled through Jensen, leaving the puck exposed for Franson to tap in.

Jensen and the rest of his Manitoba teammates would settle into the game in the second period as the play evened out at both ends.

During a short power play, the Bisons cut the deficit to one. After Dinos' goaltender Jacob DeSerres made a great acrobatic save to keep the puck out of the net initially, Manitoba continued to chip away and would eventually be rewarded. Aaron Lewadniuk got credit for a goalmouth chip-in at the 12:42 mark.

An innocent-looking shot by Jordan DePape nearly tied the game moments later, but instead it was the Dinos who answered to restore their two-goal lead. Taking the puck from Ryan Harrison in the left corner boards, Spencer Edwards dished a pass to a streaking Curran who one-timed a clean shot past Jensen. The tally at the 18:12 mark was Curran's second of the year.

Frason added his second of the night early in the third period to round out the scoring. Skating in from the left side, Curran threw the puck towards the net where Franson took hold of it and slide his second of the night past his former junior teammate Jensen.

Calgary outshot Manitoba 32-24. The Dinos went 1-for-7 on the power play, while the Bisons went 1-for-4.

Next weekend, the Dinos open Crowchild Classic action against the Mount Royal Cougars with a home-and-home set. The Dinos will start on the road at the Flames Community Arenas on Friday, Oct. 3, before hosting the Cougars on Saturday, Oct. 4 with a 6 pm MT puck drop.

The Bisons are back at home next week as they play in their home opener weekend series with a two-game set versus the Regina Cougars from Oct 3-4 with games times on Friday at 7 p.m. CT and on Saturday at 1 p.m. CT. Games played at Wayne Fleming Arena.
