Bisons fall to #5 Huskies 64-53 in women's basketball

Manitoba drops to 1-15 with sixth-straight loss

Box Score WINNIPEG - The University of Manitoba women's basketball team played a hard-fought game against the fifth-best team in the country, the University of Saskatchewan Huskies, at Investors Group Athletic Centre on Saturday, January 24. The Bisons improved with each quarter, but ultimately lost their sixth straight with a 64-53 final score.
 

The victory extends the Huskies' win streak to seven games after a 73-46 win against the Bisons on Friday night. The loss drops Manitoba to 1-15 over the season, while Saskatchewan sits at 11-3.
 
Saskatchewan forward Daylce Emmerson led both teams with 15 points, while Sheree Carmona-Galdamez sank 14 for the Bisons.
 
Both teams adopted a defensive approach early in the first. The teams were held scoreless for a full two minutes midway through the quarter, until Rebecca Potter broke the lull by sinking a jumper for the Bisons. But the Huskies responded, scoring eight unanswered points to close out the quarter up 19-6.
 
The tables turned in the beginning of the second, when the Bisons held the Huskies scoreless for the first two minutes of play. But the Huskies broke through Manitoba's defense with a layup from Saskatchewan guard Laura Dally. The visitors went on to score nine more points to lead 31-19 heading into the second half.
 
The Bisons opened the third looking like a new team. The home side dominated possession through the first few minutes of the half and picked up the pace to force five Saskatchewan turnovers. Manitoba scored 15 points in the third to end the quarter down 47-34.
 
Fouls told the story of the final quarter, with both teams shooting in bonus for the final minutes of play. Manitoba racked up eight fouls in the fourth and scored four points off free throws, while Saskatchewan had five fouls and scored nine points from behind the line. The Huskies took the game with a 64-53 final.
 
The Bisons next play their hometown rivals, the Wesmen, at the University of Winnipeg at 6 p.m. CST on Friday, January 30. The Huskies host the Trinity Western University Spartans at 6:15 p.m. CST on Friday, January 30.
