Box Score WINNIPEG - The visiting University of Manitoba Bisons, defending CIS women's volleyball champion, defeated the University of Winnipeg Wesmen 3-0 (25-17, 25-22, 25-18) in Saturday, January 31 afternoon action in the Dr. David F. Anderson Gymnasium at the Duckworth Centre.
Manitoba with the victory improves their regular season record to 12-10 and have now won three in a row. Winnipeg with the loss fall to 8-14.
Manitoba was led by Rachel Cockrell's 15 kills. Jordana Milne followed with nine. Sarah Klassen led the team with six blocks.
Chelsea Jones and Tia Boroski led the Wesmen with seven kills each. Jones was the team leader in blocks with three. Boroski had a strong serving match finishing with four service aces.
Manitoba jumped out to a quick 6-1 lead in the opening set. The visiting Bisons continued to hold the Wesmen off balance and went into the technical timeout with a 16-12 lead. Soon after a 4-0 run by Manitoba extended their lead to 20-12 and eventually went on to win the opening set 25-17.
Both teams began the second set on equal terms battling to a score of 9-9 early on. Manitoba was able to find some breathing room soon after and carried a 16-11 lead into the technical break. Winnipeg got themselves back into the set thanks to strong serving by Boroski to tie the set at 19-19. Manitoba fought off a late rally by the Wesmen and a kill by Cockrell closed out the set by a score of 25-22.
The third set was a carbon copy of the second set with both teams staying even early on. Manitoba went on an 8-3 run to take a 16-11 lead at the technical timeout and soon after closed out the set and the match with a 25-18 advantage in the third set.
Winnipeg will close out their regular season schedule at home next Friday and Saturday February 7-8 against Trinity Western University. Manitoba will be on the road to take on MacEwan. Â Â Â
