Bisons outshoot Cougars, but fall 1-0 in women's hockey

Same two teams plays tomorrow at 1 p.m. CT

Box Score WINNIPEG – Despite heavily outshooting their opponents, the Mount Royal Cougars, the University of Manitoba Bisons women's hockey team was shutout 1-0 on Friday, October 16 at Wayne Fleming Arena.

With the win, the Cougars move to 1-3-0-1, while the herd fall to 2-3-0-0.

Mount Royal goalie Jessica Ross was outstanding, stopping all shots 31 she faced en route to the Cougars first win of the season. Rachel Dyck did her part for the Bisons as well, with 13 saves.

The lone goal in the game was scored at 5:45 of the third period, as Kennedy Bozek crashed the net hard for the visitors, and scooped up a Hali Reardon rebound.

"We've got to start better," Bison head coach Jon Rempel said postgame.

"I didn't think we were ready to play tonight quite honestly, and I think it took us too long to get going. I thought there was lots of effort, but I didn't think we had great team play."

The first period featured two penalties from both sides, as neither team was able to sustain a significant amount of momentum. Dyck, and Ross stayed on their toes as well, giving up very few second chance rebounds to keep the score knotted at zero.

Discipline was an issue for the Cougars in the middle frame yet again, as they committed three more minor penalties. As a result, the herd were able to keep play in the visitors zone. The home side would have two strong chances in tight, but hit the post on both occasions.

Manitoba started the third period of the powerplay yet again, but Ross stood her ground. Overall, the herd were 0-for-6 with the extra skater, despite a number of opportunities.

Reardon's goal at 5:45 was her first CIS tally, and it was all Mount Royal needed, as they spent the latter half of the period dumping the puck into the Bisons zone, killing valuable time off the clock.

Manitoba's top line of Alanna Sharman, Alana Serhan, and a combination of Tasmine Hemmingway, and Karissa Kirkup, would spent a strong chunk of the third on the ice, and used their speed to get to the net, but as the story goes, Ross wasn't letting anything get behind her.

Both teams hit the ice again tomorrow, with game time being 1 p.m. CT at Wayne Fleming Arena.
