Defending CIS WVB champs finish regular season with road win at MacEwan

Manitoba ends season in sixth place with 13-11 record and will play at #3 UBC-O in post-season

Box Score

It was not the finish the MacEwan University Griffins were hoping for, but with a 3-0 match loss to the University of Manitoba Bisons, the Griffins finish their inaugural season in women's volleyball just outside of the playoff picture.

The Griffins jumped out to a quick 7-2 start, but it was the Bisons who clawed back into the match to take a 9-7 midpoint lead. Despite the tentative first start for the Bisons, fourth year setter Brittany Habing showed her experience making numerous impressive setting decisions.

The Bisons would go on to take the opening set 25-19.

Jumping out to another quick start, the Griffins would lead 11-6 in the second set, prompting a momentum changing Bisons time out. Jordana Milne would build on that momentum, going on a serving run to even the match at 16 all.

Porcha Diggs, playing in her final career game, was a spark plug for the Griffins posting four second set kills. As usual, the Bisons Brittany Cockrell was in fine form and sat with 13 kills at the end of two sets.

The Bisons would maintain their momentum as they built a 22-18 lead after a stretch of undisciplined play by the Griffins. Manitoba would take the second set 25-20.

With the Griffins renewing their commitment to team discipline, the maroon and white would force the Bisons to struggle with serve receive in the early goings of the third set. Hitting errors would also plague the Bisons in the middle section of the third, but the Bisons would stay in contact on the scoreboard.

Christina Campbell has another standout game for the Griffins both offensively and defensively making several scrambling digs in the third set, to compliment her seven third set kills.

Giving the crowd on hand a thrill, both teams displayed great volleyball with a game point rally on the Bisons first match point, but it was the Griffins who would finish off the play with Campbell finding the open court.

Campbell, finishing with 11 kills, 19 digs and an ace, would go on to be named the Player of the game for the Girffins. Rachel Cockrell would take the honours for the Bisons finishing the match with 17 kills and six digs.

The Griffins have now officially ended their first Canada West season with a 11-13 record to sit eighth, while the Bison (13-11) finish the regular season sixth in league standings.

Manitoba, the defending CIS WVB champs, will now go on the road for the 2015 post-season when they play the Canada West Quarter-Final best-of-three series against the #3 UBC Okanagan Heat (19-5) with game one on Friday, February 13 at 8 p.m. CT then game two on Saturday., February 14 at 7 p.m. CT and game three (if necessary) on Sunday, February 15 at 5 p.m. CT.
