Box Score Lethbridge – The 'Horns got off their season-long skid Friday, January 22 evening with a 76-66 win over the Manitoba Bisons in women's basketball action.
The win moves the 'Horns to 1-10, while the Bisons remain unless and fall to 0-13.
Pronghorn newcomer Danielle Fritzke led the way in the win with a team high 16 points, while Mariah Miller had a huge night as well recording a double-double with 15 points and 14 rebounds. Elizabeth Buie also chipped in with 15 points, while freshman Katie Keith was one point short of a double-double and finished the night with nine points and 11 boards.
For the Bisons, Nicole Konieczny was the lone player to hit double digits and finished with a game high 21 points. Montana Kinzel and Cara Neufled each chipped in with nine points.
The first quarter featured back-and-forth basketball, as the teams swapped points the whole way through. Nicole Konieczny and Cara Neufeld each put away two three pointers, leading the Bisons to a 21-20 lead to end the first quarter. The 'Horns' Danielle Fritzke potted 2 three pointers of her own.
The 'Horns came to play in the second quarter, out-playing the Bisons, and taking a 12 point lead into the break 45-33. In the first half, the 'Horns outrebounded the Bisons, 29-18, but the Bisons went to the locker room shooting more efficiently than the 'Horns, 39.4% to the 'Horns 38.2%. Free throws made the difference in the half. Lethbridge went 13 for 17 (76.5%), while the Bisons went a paltry 2 for 8 (25.0%). Konieczny lead the Bisons with 11 points in the half, and Fritzke lead the 'Horns with 14.
The Bisons came out strong to start the second half, cutting into the 'Horns 12-point lead and ending the third quarter only trailing by 3. Konieczny continued her solid play and lead the Bisons.
The home team got back to the game plan in the 4th quarter, creating some separation from the Bisons. Fritzke kept up her solid play, and lead the 'Horns with 16 points, while Elizabeth Buie and Mariah Miller got in on the points party, scoring 15 each. The game ended with the 'Horns dominating the rebound game, 64-39, and outshooting the Bisons from the field, 33.3% to 32.9%.
