The Bison basketball teams continue the second half of the 2015-16 conference season by hosting the Regina Cougars on Friday, January 29 and Saturday, January 30 at the Investors Group Athletic Centre (U of Manitoba campus). On Friday, the women's game is at 6 p.m. CT and the men's game scheduled for 8 p.m. CT while on Saturday, women's start at 4 p.m. CT and men's at 6 p.m. CT.
The Bison men's basketball team (9-5) are in a tight battle for a top spot in the Pioneer division as they are in fourth place but only a game back of UBC (10-4) and Regina is at 8-4 but with two games in hand. Manitoba has gone 3-3 since the start of the second half of the Canada West season in January.Â
In this conference men's basketball season, the Bisons are sixth in scoring offence at 80.9 points per game and 13th in scoring defence at 78.2 points per game. In Canada West assists per game, Manitoba is first with 17.6 per game and in rebounds per game, Manitoba is fifth in conference at 41.6. In addition, the Herd is eighth with 7.9 steals per game. Individually, co-captain A.J. Basi is tied for fifth in Canada West and leads the team in scoring with 17.4 points per game while Basi second with 2.9 made 3 pointers per game. Co-captain Wyatt Anders leads the conference with 10.6 rebounds per game while Keith Omoerah is fifth with 8.2 rebounds per game. In assists per game, Ilarion Bonhomme is fifth, Omoerah is seventh and Anders tied for ninth with 3.8, 3.6 and 3.4.
The Bison women's basketball team (1-13) won their first conference game of the season with a road win at Lethbridge on Jan. 23/16 and play against #3 Regina (11-1). Both teams are on a winning streak with Regina winning last six conference games.
In this conference women's basketball season, the Bisons are 12th in scoring offence at 59.5 points per game and 16th in scoring defence at 80.5 points per game. In Canada West 3 point field goals percentage, the Bisons are eighth at 29.6%; tied for eighth in conference steals per game with 8.9 and tied for ninth in conference blocks per game at 2.9. Individually, captain Jenilyn Monton leads the team with 11.6 points per game and rookie Nicole Konieczny is second with 11.1 ppg. Claire Harvey is third in conference blocks with 2.0 per game. Konieczny leads the team in minutes played at 31.3 per game.
Bison Notes: In Canada West men's basketball playoffs this season, Top 7 teams in Pioneer Division and Top 3 from the Explorer Division qualify for the post-season with Top 4 in Pioneer avoiding paly-in Series and playing in quarter-final round.
