Bisons rebound for 3-0 win at home in women's hockey vs. Saskatchewan

Manitoba earn split during weekend series

Box Score

WINNIPEG - On Saturday, January 30, the Manitoba Bisons women's hockey team hosted the Saskatchewan Huskies for the second of a two-game weekend series at the Wayne Fleming Arena. The Bisons were eager to come back after their Friday 3-1 loss and dominated the overall game, shutting out the Huskies 3-0.

The Bisons came out ready to win after a frustrating 3-1 loss on Friday night against the Huskies. Prepared to prove themselves as a winning team, the home side was the first and the last team to score in Saturday's game when co-assistant captain Caitlin Fyten put the puck past the net with 9:19 left in the first. Karissa Kirkup assisted her goal.

"We limited their scoring chances. It's probably one of the first games all year I've seen pure desperation out of our team, which was needed, " said Bison head coach Jon Rempel

The Bisons gave the Huskies a run for a potential series' win as they continued to keep up the speed of the game. The play moved back forth between both ends, with the Bisons taking a couple of penalties in the second period for body checking and boarding. Manitoba didn't let their disadvantage keep them from playing defensively. They kept the puck away from their net.

No one scored in the second period, but after two penalties for the home team Alexandra Anderson was the third Bison to put her team down a player on the ice for the last two minutes in the second. The Huskies did their best score, but the Bisons' defense stayed strong keeping the other side's score at zero.

A couple of scrambles in front of the Bisons' net started off the third period, and the Bisons' bench erupted in cheers when Charity Price scored on the Huskies just 1:53 into the third. Elisha Oswald assisted the goal.

Bison Lauryn Keen secured the win for her team when she scored an unassisted goal with 10:20 to go in the game. Bison netminder Amanda Schubert earned the shutout and first star honours with a 21 save performance.

The Bisons are the road next weekend (Feb. 5-6) for a two-game series against the Calgary Dinos, while the Saskatchewan Huskies head west to play against the UBC Thunderbirds.
