Box Score CALGARY – The fifth-ranked University of Calgary Dinos fired from all cylinders from start to finish Friday, October 14 night, handing the Manitoba Bisons the third-worst loss in program's football history with a 63-6 win at McMahon Stadium.
Led by the return of both Michael Klukas and Austen Hartley to the receiving corps, the Dinos picked up 619 yards in their best offensive outburst of the year. Klukas finished with two catches for 52 yards and a touchdown, playing his first game of the 2016 season, while Hartley returned to the field after missing two games and promptly led the way with eight catches for 180 yards and a touchdown.
The defence, Calgary's strength so far in 2016, got in on the action too, hauling in three interceptions – including a 77-yard return TD by Hunter Turnbull – and limited Manitoba to just 200 offensive yards on the night.
With the victory, the Dinos improve to 5-1 and clinch a playoff spot for the tenth consecutive season. Manitoba falls to 2-4 record and second consecutive defat, both on the road.
Calgary's first interception led to their first touchdown as Brennan Van Nistelrooy picked off Theo Deezar on the seventh play of the game. After a big gain by Hartley, Jimmy Underdahl found Jeshrun Antwi for a 20-yard touchdown, his first of two on the day. The Dinos' second TD also came one play after Hartley picked up a big gain, this time 34 yards, and Bryce Harper ran it in from six yards out for his first of two on the night.
The Dinos' special teams got into the act late in the second quarter, when Robert Woodson blocked a Matt Riley punt and Hunter Karl scooped it up and ran it in for a touchdown, essentially putting the game out of reach before half time.
If it wasn't already out of reach then, 17 more points from Calgary in the first eight minutes of the third quarter salted it away. The dagger came when Turnbull picked off Deezar and scampered 77 yards downfield, making the score 45-6.
It wasn't all positive news for Calgary, however. One drive before Turnbull's pick six, fifth-year quarterback Underdahl ran for a first down but landed awkwardly, untouched, on the one-yard line. He made his way to the Calgary dressing room and did not return to the game.
Underdahl finished with 207 passing yards and two TDs on 11-of-19 passing, while his replacement, Sinagra, completed six of nine passes for 146 yards and two touchdowns – one each to Hartley and Klukas. Harper, meanwhile, racked up 135 rushing yards to go with his two majors.
Defensively, Jack McEwen's 5.5 tackles led the way for the Dinos as he picked up 2.5 sacks and a forced fumble on a night where the Calgary defence held Manitoba to just 95 rushing yards. Boston Rowe also had a solid night defensively, picking up 5.5 tackles and assisting on one of McEwen's sacks.
On a long night for the Bisons defence, DJ Lalama had eight tackles – all solos – while Caleb Abraham added 7.5. Deezar finished the night 13-for-29 for 144 yards and three interceptions, with Cam Fox churning up 73 yards on 13 carries along the ground.
Manitoba's two scores, both first-half field goals by Brad Mikoluff, came on the only two forays inside the Dinos' 20-yards line on the night. In fact, the closest the Bisons got to Calgary's end zone in the entire second half was the 49-yard line, and just five of their 21 drives in the game ended inside Calgary territory.
Manitoba (2-4) heads north to face the Alberta Golden Bears next Saturday afternoon at Foote Field before returning home to close out the season against the Regina Rams. The Dinos, meanwhile, play their third straight home game next week when they welcome the Saskatchewan Huskies (3-3) to McMahon Stadium Saturday, Oct. 22 for a 1 p.m. kickoff, live on Shaw TV and CanadaWest.tv. Calgary will close the season one week later as they face the UBC Thunderbirds in Vancouver.
