Box Score CALGARY – Lauryn Keen and Erica Rieder scored for the Bisons to secure the sweep over Mount Royal in women's hockey on Saturday, October 15 afternoon. Erin McLean scored her first goal as a Cougar in the loss.
With the road weekend series sweep, the Bisons improve to a perfect 4-0-0-0 during the young Canada West conference season, while the Cougars fall to 0-4 with the loss. Maniotoba won 2-0 to start the weekend on Fri., Oct. 14.
After a scoreless first period, it was Mount Royal who opened the scoring just 1:34 into the second. After a mad scramble in front of the Manitoba goal the puck squirted out to the point where Erin McLean was waiting for it. McLean let a wrist shot through the crowd that beat goalie Amanda Schubert over the right shoulder.
The Bisons got it back just five minutes later. Keen came off the half wall and let go a shot on Cougars' rookie goaltender Zoe DeBeauville. DeBeauville got a piece of it but the puck trickled just behind her and into the goal to knot the game at one.
Manitoba took the lead back early in the third period when Bison alternate captain Rieder potted her second goal of the weekend. Rieder took a shot from a sharp angle and it squeaked through DeBeauville for the game winner.
Manitoba will head back to Winnipeg for their home opener on Thursday, October 20. They will host the Regina Cougars at Wayne Fleming Arena at 7 p.m, CT. Mount Royal also begins their third week of action on a Thursday night when they welcome the Calgary Dinos to Flames Community Arenas. The start time for this Crowchild Classic match goes at 7pm.
