The Manitoba Bisons (2-4) travel on the road for a third consecutive game as they face the Alberta Golden Bears (1-5) on Saturday, October 22 with kickoff at 2 p.m. CT. The game will be available on live webcast (canadawest.org – fee required).
This is the second meeting between the two teams in the conference regular season in 2016. Manitoba won 42-12 in week three on Sept. 16 at home.
In the conference standings with two games left, Manitoba is in fifth spot with four teams making the playoffs and this game is crucial to make a push for the post-season. Calgary has clinched a playoff berth with a 5-1 record while Regina in second at 4-2 and a third place tie with Saskatchewan and UBC sitting with a 3-3 record. Alberta is in sixth place with a 1-5 mark.
In the latest 2016 CIS Top 10 poll, the Bisons are not in Top Ten while Calgary is ranked number four and Regina in eighth spot.
Over Brian Dobie's tenure with Manitoba (21 years), the Bisons have a 15-13-1 overall record against the Bears and 6-7-1 on the road during the conference regular season. Last season, Manitoba played the Bears twice and defeated them both times as Manitoba won 29-7 over Alberta at home (Oct. 23/15) and Bisons won 42-32 on the road (Sept. 25/15).
In 2016, Manitoba suffered the third worst defeat in program's history when they lost 63-6 at Calgary on Oct. 14 in week six. Prior to that, the Bisons have been defeated at UBC (L 53-50 in 4 OT on Sept. 30) at home versus Calgary (L 23-14) on Sept. 1 and at Regina (L 41-38) on Sept. 8 while home wins against Alberta and Sask. (W 38-17) on Sept. 24.
Alberta won their first game this 2016 season when they won 19-18 over Regina on Oct. 15 in week 5 after starting with five consecutive losses.
In 2016 conference regular season team stats after week six, Manitoba is second in offence with 31.3 points average per game while Alberta is sixth at 14.5 points per game. In offence yards per game, the Bisons are third with 478.8 while the Bears are sixth at 378.7. On defence, Manitoba is fifth with 34.8 points allowed per game while Alberta is sixth at 40.0 pts./game. In yards allowed, Manitoba is fifth (505.3) and the Bears are last in sixth (513.2).
