Bisons Fall Short In Up-Tempo Game with 3-2 loss to UBC

Manitoba earns home weekend split against T-Birds

Box Score

WINNIPEG, MB – A goal midway through the period was enough for the Thunderbirds' second win of the season as the Manitoba Bisons dropped a 3-2 decision to UBC.

With the victory, UBC improves to 2-6-0 while Manitoba falls to 3-3-0.

Both teams came out with a good pace, but it would be the UBC Thunderbirds who would open the scoring at 4:24. With Manitoba's Jordan DePape watching from the penalty box, UBC's Joe Calvalho wired a shot from the point on net that Justin Paulic saved, but the rebound landed in the slot where Joe Antilla slid it under Paulic for the 1-0 lead.

Manitoba would tie the game late in the period off a set play. Brad Bowles won an offensive zone face-off cleanly, and the puck was picked up by Jordan DePape who wired it through a maze of players including goaltender Derek Dun for the equalizer at 17:38.

That celebration was short-lived, however, as UBC roared back 44 seconds later. AustinVetterl was the benefactor of some nice passing between Mahraj Hayer and Anthony Bardaro, and he potted the Thunderbirds' second goal to send this game into the intermission at a 2-1 score.

The second period featured a number of big hits and good chances at both ends, but only the home side would capitalize. Manitoba's Warren Callis found Quinton Lisoway wide open in the slot, and Lisoway zipped the puck high on the glove side past Dun at 11:30 to square the game at 2-2 through 40 minutes.

The third period was more of the same action as both teams finished checks while looking for the lead. UBC's Riley Guenther received a pass in the slot midway through the period, and his quick shot was redirected by Anthony Bardaro past Paulic to put the Thunderbirds up 3-2 at 11:44. Despite having some great chances down the stretch, the Bisons couldn't find any room on Derek Dun in the final frame as UBC escapes Wayne Fleming Arena with the 3-2 win.

Manitoba will look to get back in the win column as they travel to Calgary to face the 4-2-0 Dinos next weekend (Nov. 4-5) while UBC host 2-3-1 Lethbridge on same weekend.
