Bisons sweep Lethbridge with 6-1 road win in women's hockey

Manitoba begin 2016-17 conference regular season with two victories over weekend

Box Score Lethbridge – The Lethbridge Pronghorns women's hockey team hosted their second contest of Canada West conference play and fell 6-1 to the Manitoba Bisons on Saturday, October 8 afternoon.

With the road victory, the BIsons swept the season opener weekend series as they defeated Lethbridge on Friday with a 4-0 shutout win.

Alanna Sharman scored twice to pace the Bisons, while Venla Hovi, Alana Serhan, Erica Rieder and Lauryn Keen each had singles. Sarah Spence scored the lone Pronghorn goal.

The first period was dominated by the Bisons as they come out of the period with a 3-0 lead on the home team. After a great start to the game by the Horns, the Bisons attacked back with a goal at 10:37 of the first period as Jayden Skioleski shot the puck from the point that ended up being deflected in by Keen.

Serhan scored on the power play and then only 11 seconds later the Bisons struck again with a goal by Rieder to round out the first period scoring.


The Bisons controlled play in the second period, with Horns goaltender Jessica Lohues trying to keep the home side in the game by making remarkable saves. Jordyn Zacharias for the Bisons had majority of the chances in the period but Lohues kept denying all attempts until the end of the second period. Venla Hovi's deflected home the lone second period goal, giving the Bisons a 4-0 cushion to start the third.

The Bisons started the third period on the power play and converted off another deflection. Sharman picked up her first of two straight goals and rounded out the Bisons scoring before the five minute mark of the third.

After a timeout called by Coach Janus, the Horns came back with a few chances, and Sarah Spence would convert off a turnover by the Bisons goaltender Amanda Schubert and scored the Horns first goal of the season.

The Bisons held a 49-11 shots on goal advantage, with Lohues making 43 saves in the contest and Schubert with the ten save victory for the visitors.

The 'Horns head out on the road next weekend, traveling to Regina to face the Cougars, while the Bisons will be back on the road to face the Mount Royal Cougars in Calgary on October 14-15 weekend.
