The Bison women's hockey team finishes the 2015-16 conference regular season at home as they host the #9 UBC Thunderbirds at the Wayne Fleming Arena during the February 12-13 weekend. Puck drop versus the Thunderbirds will be 7 p.m. CT on Friday and 1 p.m. CT on Saturday.
This series is crucial as Manitoba is in fifth spot in the Canada West standings entering the weekend with a 12-12-0-2 record for 38 points but only two points out of fourth place, held by Saskatchewan, and hosting a playoff round. The Bisons have not yet clinched a playoff spot. UBC leads Canada West with a 12-8-4-2 record for 46 points (Canada West women's hockey rewards three points for regulation win).
This is the second weekend series between the two teams this Canada West season as they played earlier in October at UBC and the Bisons split the weekend (L 2-1 on Oct. 23/15 and W 4-1 on Oct. 24/15).
Manitoba is 5-7 at home so far this season and last had a home weekend sweep in late October 2015 against Calgary (W 3-2, W 5-0 on Oct. 30-31).
Manitoba and UBC have three players in the Canada West Top 15 scoring. For the Bisons, second year forward Alanna Sharman is eighth with 18 points (nine goals, nine assists). For the T-Birds, Rebecca Unrau (12g, 11a) is sixth with 23 points while Kathleen Cahoon (8g, 7a) is tied for 14th with 15 points.
In the nets, Bison third year netminder Rachel Dyck has played in 20 out of 26 conference regular season games and in fifth place in Canada West with a 1.92 Goals Against Average and sixth in Save Percentage at .915 and tied for sixth with eight conference wins. Third year goalie Amanda Schubert is second with three shutouts while Dyck is tied for sixth with two shutouts. Shubert has also played in eight games with 0.80 GAA and .958 Save Pct. with four wins.
Bison Notes: On Saturday, February 13, it will be the senior game as Manitoba honours Bison fifth year defenceman and co-captain Lindsay Blight plus fifth year forward and co-captain Kayleigh Wiens.
