The Manitoba Bisons (2-2) is on a two game conference winning streak in football and look to continue their winning ways as they travel on the road to face the defending CIS champion UBC Thunderbirds (2-2) on Friday, September 30 with kickoff at 8 p.m. CT. The game will also be on live webcast (canadawest.org – fee required).
This is the lone meeting between the two teams in the conference regular season in 2016.
In the latest 2016 CIS Top 10 poll, the Bisons vault back in the Top Ten at number nine after two weeks of being unranked. UBC is just outside of this week's Top 10.
Earlier this season, the two teams met in a pre-season tilt in the first-ever CIS football game played on Vancouver Island. The Bisons prevailed by a 50-7 score in Langford, B.C. (Aug. 26/16).
Last season, Manitoba played the Thunderbirds three times and were defeated twice in the regular season (L 51-48 on Sept. 19/15 at Man.; L 24-10 on Oct. 31/15 at UBC) and defeated once in the post-season (L 52-10 on Nov. 7/15 at UBC in Canada West Semi-Final). Over
Brian Dobie's tenure with Manitoba (20 years), the Bisons have a 17-14 overall record against the T-Birds and 10-6 on the road during conference regular season.
In 2016, UBC won 39-24 over Alberta at home (Sept. 3/16), lost 35-8 at Calgary (Sept. 9/16), lost 20-10 at home to Regina (Sept. 17/16) and won 62-0 at Alberta (Sept. 24/16).
In 2016 conference regular season team stats after week four, Manitoba is tied for first in offence with 33.0 points average per game while UBC is third at 29.8 points per game. In offence yards per game, the Bisons are second with 528.8 while the T-Birds are fifth at 412.5. On defence, Manitoba is third with 23.3 points allowed per game while UBC is second 19.8 pts./game. In yards allowed, Manitoba is second (417.8) and the Thunderbirds are third (434.3).
