Bisons lose to #4 Thunderbirds at home in women's volleyball

Manitoba looks to rebound at home vs. Calgary on Jan. 20-21

Winnipeg, MB – On Saturday, Jan 14, the #4 UBC Thunderbirds returned to the Investors Group Athletic Centre to take on the hometown Manitoba Bisons in women's volleyball for the second time this weekend. The T-Birds took the Friday night game over the Bisons 3-1 (25-18, 21-25, 25-9, 25-16). On Saturday, the visitors from Vancouver won 3-0 (25-21, 25-23, 25-22) set sweep over the Herd in their second match of the weekend.

"We made mistakes tonight, when we needed to make a play." said Bison Head Coach, Jon Hykawy.

The Thunderbirds took the first set of the evening 25-21 with strong play coming from fifth year Danielle Brisebois who had three kills, a service ace, two digs and a block.  Kearley Abbot led her Bisons squad with four kills and a service ace. The second set was 16-15 in favour of UBC at the technical timeout. Maggie Li of the Thunderbirds would put down a service ace, her second of the game, to help push her side to an eventual 25-23 set win for the visitors.

Bisons began to turn their game around in the third set.  A few service aces, one from first year player Jocelyn Koswin had her team up before UBC fought back gained the lead at the mid way point, 16-14. The Thunderbird attack kept coming from several different players. Manitoba would make it close but the T-Birds would go on to take the third and final set 25-22.

Kearley Abbott lead Manitoba in kills with seven to go along with three service aces. Maggie Li finished the game with nine kills to along with a service ace for UBC.

Manitoba will look to rebound next week when they take on the University of Calgary Dinos (Jan. 20-21). UBC will be back at home playing against the Mount Royal Cougars (Jan. 20-21).
