Box Score WINNIPEG – The #8 University of Manitoba Bisons women's hockey team scored three power-play goals, but can't rally as they drop their home-open to the #1 University of Alberta Pandas as the visitors scored a very late goal for a 4-3 road win on Friday, October 13 at the Wayne Fleming Arena.
"We played well enough to win for sure," said Jon Rempel, Bisons Head Coach. "We can't lose games like that."
The Bisons were in tough for their first home game against the reigning U SPORTS champs. However, both teams were coming off a loss before this meeting.
With the score tied at three and eight seconds to go in the third period, Pandas forward Amy Boucher wristed one to the top corner to clinch the win for the away team and earn herself first star.
The Bisons had encountered some bad luck early in the first period. A scramble and a bad bounce off their own player opened the scoring against the home team. The goal was credited to Boucher, her first of two.
A carry-over penalty for the Pandas put the Herd on the power-play to open the second period. Jenai Buchanan put one past Pandas netminder, Dayna Owen, after just 36 seconds of play to tie it up at two.
The Bears then led 3-2 in the third when Buchanan got rocked headfirst into the boards by Pandas rookie, Abby Krzyzaniak. Buchanan was slow to get up, but managed to skate off the ice. Krzyzaniak served a five-minute major for boarding and game misconduct, putting the hosts on the power-play once again.
With a Panda in the box, Bisons Alexandra Anderson took advantage and tucked away the tying goal. However, three power-play goals weren't enough as the Herd lost at home.
The same two teams play tomorrow night (Sat., Oct. 14) at 7 p.m. CT.
