Box Score CALGARY – After losing by 59 points just a month ago, the Manitoba Bisons almost pulled off the big upset against #2 Calgary Dinos in week six of Canada West football as they lost 36-27 at windy McMahon Stadium on Saturday, October 14.
With the road loss, Manitoba drops to 1-5 while Calgary remain perfect with a 6-0 record so far in 2017.
"We could have stolen the game and felt we played right with one of the best teams in the country," commented
Brian Dobie, Bison Football head coach, after the contest. "We got the lead in the third but didn't score enough with the wind as settled for field goals on drives. But, we held them for quite awhile."
Manitoba were only down by 20-14 at half after scoring on a Jesse Walker 20 yard TD catch and two Brad Mikoluff field goals.
In the second half, the visitors made it interesting. Quarterback Theo Deezar scored on a one yard dive for a 21-20 lead at the start of the third. The Bisons held Calgary at bay for the rest of the quarter and added two more field goals from 36 and 39 yards with the wind.
The most potent offence in the country and leading team in the country were stymied until 8:30 left in the game when they converted a touchdown drive to tie the score. After a single on the kickoff, Manitoba gave up a safety and field goal late in the game. The Herd could not muster another comeback and lost a tough game on the road.
"They guys know it was right there for the taking…proud of our effort and had Calgary play catch-up for most of the game," said Dobie.
For the Herd, Walker led the way with six catches for 113 receiving yards and 1 TD while Stephen Ugbah had 58 receving yards on three grabs. Jamel Lyles added 47 rushing yards on 13 attempts while Theo Deezar went 9-16 for 170 passing yards and Des Catellier was 8-16 for 108 passing yards and 1 TD. Marcel Arruda-Welch and Cole Adamson had one interception each. Arjay Shelley and Brock Gowanlock led the team with six total tackles each. Shelley also added two break-ups while Gowanlock had one forced fumble.
Manitoba still has a chance for a playoff spot with two games remaining as they host UBC on Saturday, October 21 at 2 p.m. CT at IGF.
