Manitoba suffers loss to #3 Saskatchewan in men's hockey

Bisons earn weekend split after 6-0 nothing loss

Box Score

MANITOBA – Bison men's hockey team tried but couldn't manager to keep their weekend winning streak against #3 Saskatchewan Huskies, losing 6-0 on Saturday, October 21 at the Wayne Fleming Arena.

With the road win, Saskatchewan now moves to 5-0-1 record. Manitoba drops to 2-4-0 mark.

Tensions were high between the two teams as the Saskatchewan Huskies got the momentum right from the start, with a goal by Colby Harmsworth ten minutes into the first period. Parker Thomas scored the second goal for the visiting team five minutes later.

Shots on net were 10-10 going into the second period. Bison goalie Byron Spriggs blocked the puck five more times before reaching too far to the left, opening the net for Huskies player Jesse Forsberg to shoot it in and score the third goal.

The Bisons finished the second period strongly, upping their shots on net to 25. However, Huskies player Josh Roach was still able to get passed the defensemen to score the team's fourth goal before the end of the second period.

Huskies player Kohl Bauml scored the team's fifth goal, only seconds into the third period. Players on both teams got heated in the final minutes of the game with fights breaking out, several penalties, and players leaving the ice.

"It's a long, intense rivalry between Manitoba and Saskatchewan," said Bison Head Coach Mike Sirant. "We wanted to keep competing, regardless of what the score was. At times, we let our frustrations show."

Parker Thomas' second goal for the Huskies brought the final score to 6-0.

"We had some chances and just couldn't get the puck by the goalie," said Sirant. "And our coverage around our net was not good tonight. Our performance last night created an opportunity today to really go for it, so we're not satisfied."

The next action for Manitoba host Mount Royal on Friday, Oct. 27 at 7 p.m. CT while the Huskies on the road at Calgary at 7 p.m. MT on the same day.

Three Stars:

  1. Jordan Cooke - SASK, 34 saves
  2. Parker Thomas - SASK, 2 goals
  3. John Lawrence - SASK, 2 assists
