FB: Fast start paces #3-ranked Calgary to 34-16 win over Manitoba

Manitoba tried to rally again in the fourth quarter, but Calgary soundly won this matchup to remain undefeated through six games.

With both teams coming off the bye week looking to make a statement, it was a strong start by the Calgary Dinos that carried the day. Building a 22-point lead in the first half, no. 3 ranked Calgary (6-0) was able to beat Manitoba (3-3) 34-16 on Friday night at McMahon Stadium.

The Dinos were paced by another excellent receiving performance by Hunter Karl, who grabbed nine passes for 125 yards and a touchdown. Quarterback Adam Sinagra had a down night by his standards — he was averaging 429 yards passing per game headed into Friday — but still connected on 30-of-45 passes for 305 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception.

Manitoba, meanwhile, had a bright spot in running back Jamel Lyles, who had 147 yards on 15 carries, including his first rushing touchdown of the season in the fourth quarter. Lyles is the conference leader in rushing yards and this was his best statistical game of the season thus far.

Bisons quarterback Des Catellier was 9-for-23 passing for 121 yards and was under pressure from a blitzing Calgary front. Leading the way in receiving, though, was Dylan Schrot, who caught two balls for 60 yards — including an incredible one-handed grab against the sideline.

The game started with a promising drive by the Bisons, as they drove out into Calgary territory. The drive was stymied by a costly turnover, though, as Des Catellier and Lyles had some miscommunication on a handoff that ended with the ball on the turf. Dinos linebacker Boston Rowe picked it up and took it 68 yards to the house for the defensive touchdown.

Calgary added to their lead with a 24-yard catch and reception from Sinagra to Karl. Another touchdown pass to Alex Basilis, then a safety, had the Dinos up 22-0 with 10:52 left in the second.

Another Dinos touchdown in the third quarter, this one a 20-yard run from Robinson Rodrigues, gave the Dinos a 34-1 lead.

Manitoba, though, slowed the Dinos momentum from there. They went into halftime with a rouge. Then, down 34-1 at the end of three quarters, they scored two straight rushing touchdowns.

First, it was Lyles with a 17-yard run with 12:55 left. Then, his backup on the evening Victor St. Pierre-Laviolette had a 24-yard scamper to make it 34-14.

Another pair of Manitoba rouges would give the game its final score.

Bison football now prepare for a Week 7 matchup with the Saskatchewan Huskies on the road. That game will go on Saturday, October 20 at 2 p.m. CST.
