MVB: Calgary responds to Friday loss with straight sets win over Bisons

Dustin Spiring had seven kills in the match, while Kevin Negus added six.

CALGARY  The University of Calgary Dinos pulled through with a three-set win (25-15, 25-21, 25-20) on Saturday night at the Jack Simpson Gym to split their weekend series with the Manitoba Bisons.

After a tough five-set loss in Friday's weekend opener, the win snapped a three-game losing skid for the Dinos, who improve to 3-5 on the season. Manitoba sits at 4-6 after the split.

"More than anything it was a great bounce back from the last three games because it was super frustrating," said fifth-year setter Blain Cranston. "For us to come out tonight and execute from point one all the way to the end that 25th point in the third set was so big for us. We have had so much adversity in the past two weeks for us to come out and perform the way we did was huge. It proved to us that we can play at that level and now we just have to maintain that moving forward."

The Dinos executed a strong first set, taking a 5-0 lead and extrapolating that to a 25-15 win. Tim Taylor led a strong second set with eight kills, and the Dinos polished off the third set with resiliency and teamwork, fending off the Bisons for a 25-20 victory.

After recording 24 kills Friday night, fourth-year outside hitter Taylor added 17 more and also picked up a team-leading 12 digs on the night. Liam Kuppe chipped in with 13 kills for Calgary, which hit at a .278 rate throughout the night.

Calgary dug the ball well on the night, picking up 39 against 22 for Manitoba. The Bisons managed just 27 kills in the three sets, with Dustin Spiring leading the way with seven while Kevin Negus added six and the tandem of Dylan Sutherland and Brendan Warred added four each. Kyle Martens was in on 10 of Manitoba's 22 digs on the evening.

With the win in their pockets, the Dinos focus their attention to next weekend when they head back on the road to face the always-tough Trinity Western Spartans in Langley Nov. 30-Dec. 1. Manitoba, meanwhile, will face provincial rival Brandon back home at the IGAC in Winnipeg.
