Women's hockey student-athlete Caitlin Fyten has been named the Smitty's Bison Sports Female Athlete of the Week for the week ending March 4, 2018.
Fifth year captain and defenceman Caitlin Fyten scored the game-winner in first overtime during game one of the 2018 Canada West Women's Hockey Final and the No. 1 Bisons never looked back as they clinched their third conference title during the 21 year program's history.
Fyten, 22, had another impressive showing during the Bisons playoff run as she again played against the top lines of the No. 8 Saskatchewan Huskies during the CW Final.
The 5'7" defenceman was named the First Star for her timely OT goal as she scored with only eight seconds left in the first overtime frame when her shot from the point found the back of the net on Friday, March 2.
The next game, the Cremona, AB native was a +1 plus/minus rating with two shots and continue her solid play and poised leadership as the Herd clinched the series and championship with a 5-2 home win. This was also the first time the Bisons won the conference women's hockey final at home plus the last time that any Bison team won a CW Championship at home was in the 2007 season.
The Bisons (regular season: 19-5-3-1; playoffs: 4-1) won their third CW title in the 21 year program's history and now prepare to play at the 2018 U SPORTS Women's Hockey Championships held by Western University from March 15-18.
