CALGARY - Mount Royal University Cougars were fresh from their victory on Friday and ready to face off against the University of Manitoba Bisons for the second time this weekend.
It took some time for the play to be defined as the Cougars were pushing a hard offensive while the Bisons were focusing on precision.
Halfway through the period, Jesse Lees found the first goal of the night with assistance from Bradley Kennedy on a powerplay.
However, the Cougars began to find themselves in a spot of trouble, awarding a couple powerplays to the Bisons. Manitoba's Jeremy Leipsic capitalized on one such opportunity to earn the Bisons' first goal of the night.
In the second period, the Cougars were struggling to coordinate their efforts. Manitoba's Colton Veloso took advantage of this and scored a quick goal just 23 seconds into the second with assistance from Geordie Keane.
The Cougars weren't about to give up. Mount Royal's Ryley Lindgren swept the puck into the net with assistance from Lees after a six minute struggle with the Bisons' defenses.
However, shortly after, Manitoba's Ben Dalke took his second goal of the weekend, bringing the Bisons into the lead.
Within just a couple of minutes, they were pushed even further in the lead by Ryan Carlson with a pass from Adam Henry.
Despite dragging behind in goals, Mount Royal was leading the count in shots on net as they pressured the Bisons' defenses. Manitoba was taking most of the penalties in the second, allowing some opportunities for the Cougars, but none that they could make stick.
As the second period waned, Manitoba stole another goal as Geordie Keane snuck into the net just a few minutes before the buzzer, closing the period with the Bisons leading 5-3.
Just 12 seconds into the third, Cougars' Kade Jensen found himself alone out front the net with the puck and made it count, scoring his first goal of the season.
Mount Royal's Lees earned his second goal of the night at the five minute mark with a quick pass from Connor Rankin.
The Cougars couldn't quite tie the game as the Bisons took control of the final plays. They won the day with a 5-4 final score.
Mount Royal will take on the Golden Bears on Friday, October 18th, as visitors. It will be broadcasted live on CanadaWest.tv, presented by Co-op.
