WKHY: Cougars take down Bisons for weekend series split

WINNIPEG- Less than 24-hours after the visiting Mount Royal Cougars were shutout by the Manitoba Bisons, the Cougars managed to salvage the weekend with a 4-0 victory over the host Bisons on Sunday Oct.13th at the Wayne Fleming Arena.

Mount Royal goaltender Cassie Shokar turned in a solid 15-save shutout performance in her first ever Canada West start.

"Goaltending is going to be a real strength for our group this year," stated Cougars head coach Scott Rivett. "She was really impressive in her first ever start in a Canada West game. Getting her significant playing time was always the plan heading into the weekend."

Fellow Cougar teammate Maddison Toppe also scored her first career goal for Mount Royal after the third-year spent a year as a red-shirt following her transfer from the Lethbridge Pronghorns.

The Bisons continued to struggle on the power play after going zero-for-five the previous night against the same Mount Royal squad. Once again the home team found themselves with the one-player advantage early in the contest but could not capitalize. The two squads played to a stalemate until the dying moments of the opening period. With 11-seconds left on the clock, Cougars' forward Breanne Trotter threw a puck into traffic in front of the Manitoba net where fellow Cougar Tatum Amy deflected the puck past Bison goaltender Amanda Schubert for the games first tally.

The visitors struck again early in the second period to extend their to two. With Schubert down trying to freeze the puck, it came loose out to the slot and was put in the back of the net by Kate Scidmore. The third-year forward's first goal of the season gave the Cougars a 2-0 lead.  Mount Royal was close to enjoying a three-goal advantage heading to the second intermission if not for a goal that was waved off for the puck being kicked into the Manitoba net.

The Cougars potted two quick goals to start the third period to expand their lead by four. Toppe scored her first as a Cougar before Tianna Ko added her first of the season just 1:25 later.

The win sees Mount Royal even their record at 2-2-0-0 while Manitoba slip to a record of 1-3-0-0.

The Bisons will be on the road next weekend for a pair of games out west against the Calgary Dinos on Oct.18thand 19th. Mount Royal will visit the University of Alberta campus to take on the Pandas on Oct.18thand 19thas well.
