CALGARY – The University of Manitoba Bisons move on in the Canada West women's soccer playoffs after defeating the University of Northern British Columbia Timberwolves 2-1 in a blustery affair at Dinosaur Field on Friday afternoon.
Paige Payne provided the lone goal for the Timberwolves while Nicole Davis was the hero for her side, scoring the eventual game-winner for Manitoba in the second half.
From kickoff, the wind looked like it was going to be a defining factor for both teams.
"The wind made it very difficult for both teams to get the ball moving," said Timberwolves head coach Neil Sedgwick. "But that's the nature of fall sports, you have to adapt to that."
After adjusting to the conditions, it was Hailey Lavarias who rocketed the opening goal on a shot that got past Canada West All-Star Brooke Molby after a series of tic-tac-toe passing from the Bisons offence.
Just over four minutes later, UNBC responded. A lob pass from Kaya Oro Martin sent Paige Payne in alone on a breakaway who navigated her way around Alexis Anderson and touched it home to tie the game going into halftime.
In the final half, Davis' tally of the game would be the eventual sinker for the Timberwolves. An odd man rush resulted in a through ball that found the Bisons striker, catching Molby out of position for the easy tally. The Manitoba goal came moments after an incredible save by Anderson on the other end.
"I'm very proud of the girls for their effort today," Bisons coach Vanessa Martinez Lagunas said. "We're going to enjoy the day off tomorrow and get ready for a great game against the Dinos on Sunday."
Molby made eight stops on the day while Anderson stopped five out of six shots to give her team the win.
Manitoba will take a day off on Saturday and get ready to face the University of Calgary Dinos on Sunday, Oct. 27 at Dinosaur Field in the Canada West quarter-final.
