MBB: Bisons shoot 44 percent, beat UBCO 91-66

Rashawn Browne had a lights out game for Manitoba, scoring 40 points.

WINNIPEG - The Manitoba Bisons (2-0) shot 44 percent as a team, downing the UBCO Heat (0-2) 91-66 on Saturday evening at Investors Group Athletic Centre.

Rashawn Browne had a lights out game for Manitoba, scoring 40 points while shooting 67 percent from the field and 75 percent from three. The Heat were led by Hafith Mballin, who had 13 points.

"He got up 26 shots, but obviously at a very, very high level of efficiency," Bisons head coach Kirby Schepp said post-game.

"It was just great to see him come out like that. I think we struggled at times offensively this weekend and he put us on his back a little bit."

Manitoba opened up a healthy first period lead, heading into the second up 23-10. Three different players scored at least five points, led by Browne and Termaine Daniels who both had six. Thirteen of Manitoba's points also came off of turnovers, including four steals and two blocks.

Much like yesterday, UBCO battled hard on the glass, out-rebounding the Bisons 16-9 but couldn't get their shots to fall, hitting at just 21 percent while Manitoba was efficient at 47.6. Sebago Jean-Charles paced his side with five points.

The Bisons increased their lead to 43-26 at halftime thanks to a 47.4 shooting percentage and 13 more points from Browne, who shot 53.8 percent from the field and 60 percent from three. Ricky Zimbakov also had five points and a steal in a strong defensive performance.

Simar Bajwa came off the bench for UBCO and gave his team a spark, recording two points, a rebound and a steal, however the visitors were unable to get any form of a sustained run due to Manitoba's balanced defence.

Treys were the story of the third period. The Heat nailed three, two of which came from Spencer Thomas, however the Bisons answered back with one each from Browne and Keiran Zziwa, helping their team to a 64-48 lead entering the fourth.

Manitoba maintained their double-digit lead in the final ten minutes, closing out a point win with more points from Browne.

Next up for UBCO is a home tilt against Thompson Rivers while the Bisons are on the bye.
