WINNIPEG – The Manitoba Bisons (5-1) continued their winning ways on Saturday, toppling the Winnipeg Wesmen (2-6) to complete a weekend sweep of their crosstown rival at the David F. Anderson Gymnasium, 77-71.
After needing overtime to beat the Wesmen in a Duckworth Challenge classic on Thursday, the Bisons were able to disperse of Winnipeg in regulation Saturday — albeit in another close finish. Once again Keiran Zziwa led the Herd in scoring, tallying 21 points, five rebounds, and two assists.
Outside shooting was friendly for the Bisons in this one, as they made 7-for-17 (41.2%) from distance, compared to just 7-for-26 (26.9%) for the Wesmen.
Manitoba also beat up the Wesmen on the glass, out-rebounding them 59-42. Both James Wagner (17 points, 13 rebounds) and Cameron O'Hara (10 points, 15 rebounds) finished with double-doubles.
"Winnipeg, they put so much pressure on you in terms of forcing turnovers and deflections, if you don't do the little execution, timing things well, you're going to turn the ball over a ton," said Bisons head coach Kirby Schepp.
"We did — we had 20 turnovers — but luckily rebounding helped us out a ton."
Winnipeg's leading scorer was Don Dayrit, who had five of his team's seven threes, finishing with 23 points. Narcisse Ambanza had 17 points, but shot just 6-for-20 and 1-for-5 from three.
In a game close throughout, Manitoba once again executed better late in the game to get the win. With just a two-point lead at the 4:33 mark, the Bisons got two baskets from O'Hara and Zziwa, sandwiched by a Rashawn Browne steal, to give them enough of a cushion.
The game became a free throw battle afterwords, as a Zziwa layup in the last seven seconds was the only field goal scored in the last 3:10.
The Bisons finish the first half of the season at home next weekend against the Fraser Valley Cascades. Game times are November 29 at 8 p.m. and November 30 at 7 p.m.
